WINNEBAGO PROFIT DROPS 73 PERCENT!
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) -- Winnebago Industries Inc. said Friday its third quarter profit skidded 73 percent as high gas prices, tighter credit and a soft economy drive motor homes sales lower industrywide.
"The motor home market has changed significantly in the past year, with dramatic declines in the past few months," CEO Bob Olson said in a statement. "Discretionary purchases have declined in the United States as the country is faced with unstable fuel prices, consumer confidence at 16-year lows and a tighter credit environment."
He said he expects no improvement in the industry for the rest of 2008.
Winnebago shares tumbled almost 10 percent.
The Forest City-based motor home manufacturer earned $3 million, or 10 cents a share, in the three months ended May 31 compared with a profit of $11.3 million, or 35 cents a share, a year ago.
Sales fell almost 40 percent to $139.7 million from $231.7 million a year ago.
The latest net income figure included a tax benefit of $8.9 million.
The company reported an operating loss of $6.9 million compared with an operating income of $14.7 million a year ago.
Analysts surveyed by Thomson Financial expected earnings of 3 cents a share on higher sales of $157.6 million. The estimates typically exclude one-time items.
Analyst Craig Kennison with Robert W. Baird & Co. said in a report issued Friday the company's pretax loss was below expectations. He said the tax benefit amounted to 24 cents a share, leaving the company with a pretax loss of 14 cents a share, significantly worse than his estimated loss of 7 cents.
Winnebago shares fell $1.23, or 9.6 percent, to $11.59 on Friday after sinking to a 52-week low of $10.86 earlier in the session.
The company sells motor homes under the Winnebago, Itasca and ERA brand names.
Olson told analysts in a conference call that dealers are cutting their inventories, a trend he expects to continue, which further reduces sales.
In addition, competitors are discounting motor homes forcing Winnebago to offer discounts.
"If we don't do something to try and stimulate the market we could get left in the dust," he said. "This could end up being a discounting war, a war I don't want to fight but it may come to that."
Profit for the first nine months of the year fell 42 percent to $15.5 million, or 53 cents a share, compared with $26.7 million, or 84 cents a share, for the comparable period a year ago which was one week shorter.
Nine-month sales fell 18 percent to $519.1 million from $632.5 million.
Olson said the industry has seen a decrease in motor home sales of more than 26 percent for the first four months of this year and a decline of more than 30 percent in both March and April, typically strong sales months.
He said additional consolidation is under way to reduce overhead costs and industry conditions are monitored on a daily basis to asses whether further cuts are needed. The restructuring will cost the company $2.5 million to $5.5 million in charges in the fourth quarter.
Olson said the company has cut employment by 830 workers, or 26 percent, through layoffs and attrition since the beginning of its fiscal year.

AN RV PRICE WAR?
CHICAGO (Reuters) - The top executive at Winnebago Industries Inc (WGO.N: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) said on Friday the motor home industry was "in for a tough go" through 2008 and warned it could lead to a "discounting war" between RV makers.
Bob Olson, Winnebago's chairman, president and chief executive, made the comments during a conference call with analysts to discuss his company's fiscal third-quarter results.

WHAT ELSE WOULD A CONGRESSMAN FROM INDIANA SAY?
RV Business
Wednesday, June 18, 2008
The recreational vehicle industry is under attack and will be in the spotlight of a Senate hearing in July as the “industry undergoes a "demagogue-style campaign," said U.S. Rep. Mark Souder, R-Fort Wayne.
As reported by the Goshen News, Souder made the remarks Monday (June 17) at the Elkhart Rotary Club before meeting with local RV industry leaders.
The congressional probe of four Indiana RV companies that made travel trailers used as temporary housing for victims of the Katrina hurricane in Louisiana will take place to try to show profiteering by the RV makers, Souder explained.
Gulf Stream Coach Inc., Nappanee, Pilgrim International Inc., Middlebury, Goshen-based Keystone RV Inc. and Forest River Inc., Elkhart are slated to appear July 9 before the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform.
Souder blamed overambitious attorneys for filing suit in the Louisiana case and complaining about formaldehyde in the new trailers.
"What were the number of complaints before Katrina, three to five?" Souder said. He said there were 20,000 of the trailers sent to Florida to house victims earlier with no complaints about formaldehyde.
But after the Katrina hurricane, "all of a sudden you have lawsuits."
Actions have consequences, Souder said. He explained he recently met with representatives of eight RV firms at his Goshen office.
"When are the facts going to catch up with the debate? It is an embarrassment to Congress and a political agenda to destroy an industry," Souder said.
He commented further on the auto industry's need to support the RV industry. He pointed out that large motorhomes need big engines to power them, and there are not enough engines being produced now.
"You will see a scaling down of motorhomes," he predicted.
He also noted the importance of tow vehicles, as 75% of RVs made are towable. He said manufacturers may decrease the number of tow vehicles made, further impacting the industry.

RV SHARES LOWER
NEW YORK (AP) -- Shares of recreational vehicle makers mostly declined Wednesday, and some set lows, as an analyst pointed to data showing continued weakness in towable retail sales.
AvondalePartners analyst Kathryn Thompson, citing data from Statistical Surveys, said towable retail sales declined 16.1 percent in April. Travel trailer retail sales declined 17.8 percent to 14,060 units, Thompson added.
"April's double-digit towable retail sales decline is a modest sequential improvement from March's 30 percent decline, but still highlights the continued weakness in this RV segment," Thompson wrote in a client note.
Consumers nationwide have cut back on their spending, given higher gas prices, tighter credit and signs of a softening labor market.
Thompson also said towable manufacturers face rising commodity costs, like steel, which potentially could further pressure margins.
Fleetwood Enterprises Inc. slipped 31 cents, or 7.4 percent, to $3.86; Thor Industries Inc. declined $1.54, or 5.8 percent, to $24.86 and set a 52-week low of $24.68.
Winnebago Industries Inc. declined 60 cents, or 4.7 percent, to $12.38, and set a 52-week low of $12.28.
Coachmen Industries Inc. rose 13 cents, or 5.2 percent, to $2.63, also setting a 52-week low of $2.48 earlier in the session.

FLEETWOOD LAYS OFF ANOTHER 400 EMPLOYEES
Corporatewide
RV Business
Saturday, June 14, 2008
Fleetwood Enterprises Inc. laid off more than 400 workers nationally Friday (June 13) in the latest move to cut costs amid dropping demand.
"We're trying to match production to market demand, and the demand is down considerably right now," said company spokeswoman Kathy Munson in a report by the Press Enterprise, Riverside.
Munson said workers were notified Thursday evening and Friday morning, and the layoffs are effective immediately. They include 34 production, development and service positions at the company's facilities at its headquarters in Riverside, Calif.
The Press Enterprise reported that Friday's 463 total layoffs include 301 workers at Fleetwood's diesel motorhome plant in Decatur, Ind., and another 128 at a gasoline motorhome facility in Paxinos, Pa. According to the Fort Wayne Ind. Journal Gazette, 43 workers were also cut at a trailer factory in Crawfordsville, Ind., and 57 at the company's travel trailer plant in Edgerton, Ohio.
Munson said it is still possible that workers will be brought back if the economy improves, but workers would need to reapply for those jobs.
"It's our hope and belief that the market will come back," she said.
She said the company still has about 8,000 workers at 28 plants nationwide.
In April, Fleetwood cut 48 local jobs and demoted dozens of other workers in an attempt to reduce costs.
