KEYSTONE LAYING OFF 10% OF IT'S WORKFORCE
RV Business
Thursday, August 7, 2008
Keystone RV Co. is laying off around 290 employees, or 10% of its work force, to keep the company’s production in line with demand and be well positioned when the market turns.
Ron Fenech, president and CEO of the Goshen, Ind.-based Thor Industries Inc. subsidiary, told WNDU, South Bend, that Keystone “wants to be prepared when the economy comes back so we are ready to roll.”
WNDU reported that the cutbacks would be spread throughout Keystone’s 15 plants. The company will still maintain around 2,500 employees.
Fenech noted that Keystone may not be as impacted as other manufacturers in the area as the firm does not build motorhomes. “We took a hit, but not as bad as some of the manufacturers,” Fenech said.
Several Elkhart County OEM’s have instituted layoffs during the past several months, most recently Monaco Coach Corp. which closed plants in Elkhart, Wakarusa and Nappanee and cut around 1,400 workers.
While the towable industry started the year well, recent months have seen wholesale shipment numbers retreat as dealers cut back on orders due to higher inventory levels.
In June, according to the latest shipment report from the Recreation Vehicle Industry Association (RVIA), towable deliveries were down 27% from a year ago with travel trailers off 24%.
The move also coincides with Thor's fourth-quarter preliminary sales report which showed a 25% decline in revenue.

FTCA Inc. today (Aug. 6) announced that it has signed a trademark licensing agreement with The Coleman Company Inc. to produce folding camping trailers bearing the Coleman brand name.
Originally a division of Coleman, FTCA was acquired by Bethesda, Md.-based private equity firm Blackstreet Capital from Fleetwood Enterprises Inc. in May.

FTCA, based in Somerset, Pa., produced folding camping trailers under the Destiny, Americana, Highlander and Evolution model lines. Fleetwood purchased the company in 1989.
"Our hard working and highly skilled people take very seriously their long-standing reputation of building the finest folding camping trailers in the world, and they value the reputation of uncompromising quality that is synonymous with the Coleman brand,” said James Sylvester, FTCA president. “This is a much welcomed event for the dedicated people of this company and its many dealers."

BLUEBIRD SET TO FLY AGAIN
RV Business
Wednesday, August 6, 2008
Blue Bird Coachworks is rolling out its first Wanderlodge in about two years, according to a report in the Macon (Ga.) Telegraph.
The high-end recreational vehicle, used in the past by the likes of country music legend Johnny Cash and currently by actor Tom Cruise, starts at about $1 million.
Blue Bird Coachworks general manager Chuck Kosmin said that finishing touches are being put on the vehicle and he expects it to hit the highway for testing this week. After some expected tweaking, it will be sent to a Wanderlodge dealer for sale.
California-based Complete Coachworks bought Blue Bird Coachworks, based in Fort Valley, Ga., a year ago and has since been working on a complete overhaul of the Wanderlodge, Kosmin said. The new owner kept the Blue Bird name. The company has continued to produce its Express Coach, a line of charter buses.
"It's very exciting for all of our employees just to resurrect the Wanderlodge from a small hiatus to get it back to another level from the standpoint of beauty," Kosmin said.
The Wanderlodge is equipped with a 600-hp Cummins engine. The redesign, Kosmin said, has focused on improvements of interior amenities such as cabinets.
The company has about 150 people working at the Fort Valley plant. Blue Bird employed 140 people there when it sold the plant, but many of those workers moved over to the school bus operation. Kosmin said about 75 people were on the payroll when the new company took over, and since then employment has about doubled.
Blue Bird sold Blue Bird Coachworks, the company said at the time, as part of a strategy to focus operations on its separate school bus manufacturing operation.

LAZYDAYS RV NEGOTIATING TO BUY THE BEAUDRY RV TUCSON DEALERSHIP AND RESORT
RV Business
Monday, August 4, 2008
Beaudry RV is negotiating a sale of its Tucson operations to Seffner, Fla.-based Lazydays RV Center Inc., according to a company memo forwarded to the Arizona Daily Star.
The Tucson newspaper reported that the June 30 memo from Beaudry Motor Co. CEO Thomas Sylvester states that Beaudry RV entered into a "letter of intent" with Lazydays on June 27 for the purchase of the dealership.
Sylvester's memo said the companies will be working on the agreement for the next 30 to 60 days and indicated that the sale is not certain. A letter of intent "allows people to negotiate and fine-tune prices, terms and conditions," said Denise Yardy, chairwoman of the Southern Chapter of the Arizona Business Brokers Association, who is not involved in the Beaudry deal. The Daily Star reported that Yardy said unlike contracts, letters of intent do not create "a firm legal obligation," and either party could walk away.
Sylvester said the memo is accurate but would not comment further. Lazydays Chief Marketing Officer Stewart Schaffer also would not comment on the possible sale. The dealership includes the Beaudry RV Resort.
Last December, Beaudry finalized the sale of its San Diego sales and service center to FreedomRoads/Camping World. Beaudry also operates a dealership in Phoenix.
RV sales have slumped in recent months, Lazydays' Schaffer said.
Lazydays, which has publicly traded debt, showed a drop of about 10% in new vehicle sales revenue in the first three months of the year compared with the same time last year, according to a financial report the company filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).
Used-vehicle sales showed a slight dip of 3% over that time, according to the report.
But while rising gas prices might seem like an obvious culprit for the falling sales, Schaffer said a tight financing market is having a much bigger impact. RV buyers often use home equity as a down payment for buying an RV. With home loans and RV financing harder to come by, some would-be buyers are unable to make purchases, Schaffer said.
"It is positive news and a tribute to all of you that a fine RV organization like Lazydays is interested in acquiring Beaudry RV despite this difficult economic climate," Sylvester wrote in the memo.
